South Carolina has become the center of attention of prospective Democrats in the last few weeks before midterm elections. Joe Biden, Steve Bullock, Michael Avenatti, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, and Michael Bloomberg have or will be visiting the state before the election.
Despite Iowa and New Hampshire being the first national contests, South Carolina will be the first state with a large African-American vote which is needed to win the nomination. There are mixed feelings in South Carolina about all the attention they’re receiving. On the one hand, all the visits are driving excitement and increasing turnouts. But on the other hand, having their state candidates closely tied to specific Democrats could open the candidates to attack from the Republican opponents.
