Though Michael Bloomberg believes he could beat Trump in a general election, he has decided not to run for president. Billionaire Bloomberg wrote in a statement that he is “clear-eyed” about the difficulty of securing the Democratic nominee in a field already so crowded. Bloomberg had previously said little about a potential run, but his aides had been interviewing potential staffers in both Iowa and New Hampshire. Bloomberg, who has been a Republican, Independent, and Democrat at various times in his life, was told that in such a progressive field, was told he would need to change his moderate views for polls.
He has decided that there are other methods to better serve the country. Bloomberg will instead be expanding his environmental philanthropy starting a new project called Beyond Carbon that is “a grassroots effort to begin moving America as quickly as possible away from oil and gas and toward a 100 percent clean energy economy.” Bloomberg says, “I will continue supporting candidates who can provide the leadership we need — on climate change, gun violence, education, health, voting rights, and other critical issues — and continue holding their feet to the fire to deliver what they promise.”
