In 2013, Buttigieg was named mayor of the year and has been described as “the most interesting mayor you’ve never heard of.” During his first term, he was deployed to Afghanistan where he served for seven months.
While running for a second term, Buttigieg came out as gay when he became a leading opponent to the Indiana Senate Bill 101 which allowed discrimination against LGBTQ+. During his time as mayor, Pete introduced the 1000 Homes in 1000 Days initiative which demolished or repaired abandoned homes in the city. Buttigieg announced on January 23, 2019, that he was creating an exploratory committee for candidacy for president. He quickly grabbed attention and rose in the polls after his first town hall and a tv interview where he criticized his former state governor, Mike Pence. Buttigieg officially announced his campaign on April 14, 2019. If elected, Pete would be the youngest and the first openly gay president.
