Former VP Joe Biden

Joe Biden, born November 20, 1942 in Scranton, PA, attended several Catholic schools before graduating from the University of Delaware with a double major in history and political science later going to Syracuse University to earn his law degree. During this time, Biden married and started raising a family.

After finishing law school, Biden worked as an attorney for four years before winning his first election for the New Castle County Council. Two years later, at age 29, he surprised everyone and won his race for the U.S. Senate. However, tragedy struck before he could be sworn in when his wife, Neilia, and daughter, Naomi, were killed in a car accident. Biden persisted continuing to raise his two boys by commuting to work each day.

Biden spent 36 years in the U.S. Senate including 8 years as chair of the Judiciary Committee and four years as chair of the Foreign Relations Committee. In 1987, Biden ran an unsuccessful presidential campaign and made a second attempt 20 years later that was even more unsuccessful. Despite this, Barack Obama chose Biden to be his running mate after winning the Democratic nomination. They then wen on to beat their Republican opponents in the November 2008 presidential election and successfully beat Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan in 2012 earning them their second term.

During his time as vice president, Biden served as an instrumental piece in achieving a bipartisan agreement on tax increases and spending cuts to avoid the fiscal cliff crisis. Biden was also a leader in the national debate about gun control. In recent years, he has also been a strong supporter of gay rights. Biden considered running for president in 2016 but decided not to because of the recent passing of his son, Beau who had battled brain cancer for the prior two years, something he has since regret.

After much anticipation, Biden officially announced that he was running for president on April 25, 2019. Despite the late announcement, Biden had stayed at the top of the polls wavering between first and second. Since his announcement, recent polls (as of May) show him having twice the support of second place, Bernie Sanders.

Joe Biden is married to Jill Jacobs and has four children. He had three children, Beau, Hunter, and Naomi with his first wife, Neilia Hunter, and he had Ashley with his second wife, Jill.
