Jay Inslee was born February 9, 1951 in Seattle, Washington. Inslee started college at Stanford University but dropped out after a year because he couldn’t get a scholarship. He returned to Washington and graduated from the University of Washington and attended Willamette University School of Law. Inslee got married to Trudi while working on his undergrad. After graduating law school, he joined the law firm Peters, Schmalz, Leadon & Fowler working as a prosecutor for 10 years.
In 1988, Inslee ran for the Washington House of Representatives and won. He was re-elected in 1990. In 1992, he was elected to the U.S. Congress, but lost his bid for reelection in 1994. In 1996, Inslee ran for governor of Washington but ultimately lost. He ran again for Congress in 1998 and became the first Democratic candidate to air attack ads against his opponent which likely contributed to his win. He continued to be re-elected until he decided to leave to focus on his governor campaign in 2012.
Inslee won the gubernatorial election in 2012 and was re-elected in 2016. During his time as governor, Inslee has focused on fighting on climate change, strengthening working families, and growing good-paying jobs.
On January 2, 2019, Inslee announced a presidential exploratory committee. On March 1, 2019, Inslee officially announced his presidential campaign bid and stated that his focus would be on combating climate change.
Jay Inslee is married to Trudi Inslee and has three children, Joe, Jack, and Connor.
