A recent allegation surfaced that could jeopardize Joe Biden’s potential campaign. Biden has been accused by former Nevada lawmaker, Lucy Flores, of inappropriately touching, smelling, and then kissing the back of her head at a 2014 rally for Flores who was the nominee for lieutenant governor of Nevada.
Biden has always been an advocate of women’s rights and a supporter of the #MeToo movement. However, Biden also has a history of what appears to be inappropriate affection: placing both hands on a woman’s shoulder for an uncomfortable amount of time, kissing women both on the lips, whispering in their ear, to name a few.
Flores wrote an essay recounting the events that was published in New York Magazine last week. Flores described her waiting to go on stage to speak to hundreds of voters when she felt him place his hands on her shoulders from behind. Flores says he then leaned in and inhaled her hair before planting a big slow kiss on the back of her head. Though it may not be considered sexual assault, it was demeaning, disrespectful, and created a clear power imbalance. “He stopped treating me like a peer the moment he touched me,” Flores said, “I wasn’t attending the rally as his mentee or even his friend; I was there as the most qualified person for the job.”
Telling only a few staffers after the event, Flores explained that she did not come forward about this experience because she wasn’t sure who to tell, fear it would be dismissed, whether it would be taken seriously, etc. She has chosen to come forward with her story at this time due to Biden’s potential bid for president. Flores says that this event should be “disqualifying” to her, but others will have to decide that for themselves.
Most high-profile candidates have said that they have no reason not to believe Flores and Biden will need to address this accusation but did not acknowledge whether they agreed the event was disqualifying. And her story is very believable looking at pictures of Biden with other women that seem a little off and uncomfortable.
In response to this allegation, Biden said that he “offered countless handshakes, hugs, expressions of affection, support and comfort” but doesn’t believe he ever acted inappropriately. If it is suggested I did so, I will listen respectfully. But it was never my intention.” Perhaps Biden is just a very affectionate person. However, if just about any other male politician were in situations as pictured, it is hard to believe that it would be so easily dismissed.
