Bernie Sanders is a United States Senator representing Vermont and is 77 years old. Sanders is an Independent but he caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate. Sanders enraptured the progressive wing of the Democratic party in 2016 and gave Hillary Clinton a tough fight for the nomination.
Sanders was born September 8, 1941 in Brooklyn, attended Brooklyn College and the University of Chicago before moving to Vermont in 1964 where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, Sanders was elected mayor of Burlington, as an independent, where he served four terms. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served for 16 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006 and is currently serving his second term.
When Sanders announced his White House run in 2015, he was considered a long shot against Hillary Clinton. But, he went on to win 23 caucuses and primaries and approximately 43% of pledged delegates, to Hillary Clinton’s 55%.
In the 2016 primaries, Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign made innovative and effective use of social media and raised astounding sums from many small donors. Sanders rejected large donations from corporations, the financial industry, and any Super PAC’s. On July 12, 2016, he formally endorsed Clinton in the general election against Trump, while urging his supporters to continue the “political revolution” his campaign began. He is married to Jane O’Meara, and they have a son, Levi.
Will Bernie Sanders run in 2020? Probably — while he has yet to officially announce another presidential campaign, he has hired many returning staffers from his previous campaign, and expanded his social media team. Also, in an interview in November, Sanders did mention he would “probably run” if he remained the best candidate to defeat Donald Trump.
