Bernie Sanders has been one of Amazon’s harshest critics. Despite the fact that CEO Jeff Bezos is the world’s richest man and is the second largest employer in the U.S., some of their own employees have such low wages that they qualify for safety net benefits like food stamps. However, because of critics like Sanders, Bezos is raising the minimum wage for all Amazon employees to $15 per hour starting in November.
Prior to this decision, Senator Sanders had introduced legislation called the “Stop BEZOS Act” which was aiming to tax large companies for every dollar their workers received in safety net benefits. This bill obviously didn’t pass but did manage to grab some attention. Sanders has since congratulated Bezos for doing the right thing and hopes that this will encourage other large corporations to follow by example.
